Nelson’s Work on Logic and Foundations and Other Reflections on Foundations of Mathematics

چکیده
This paper starts by discussing Nelson’s philosophy of mathematics, which is a blend of mathematical formalism and a radical constructivism. As such, it makes strong assertions about the foundations of mathematic and the reality of mathematical objects. We then offer our own suggestions for the definition of mathematics and the nature of mathematical reality. We suggest a second characterization of mathematical reasoning in terms of common sense reasoning and argue its relevance for mathematics

In the Light of Logic
by Solomon Feferman Oxford University Press, 1998, 352 pp. $ 60.00 US, ISBN 0195080300 REVIEWED BY ANDREW ARANA Poincaré famously compared the logician’s understanding of mathematics to the understanding we would have of chess if we were only to know its rules. ”To understand the game,” Poincaré wrote, ”is wholly another matter; it is to know why the player moves this piece rather than that oth...
متن کاملPOWERSET OPERATOR FOUNDATIONS FOR CATALG FUZZY SET THEORIES
The paper sets forth in detail categorically-algebraic or catalg foundations for the operations of taking the image and preimage of (fuzzy) sets called forward and backward powerset operators. Motivated by an open question of S. E. Rodabaugh, we construct a monad on the category of sets, the algebras of which generate the fixed-basis forward powerset operator of L. A. Zadeh. On the next step, w...
متن کاملOn Nelson’s Position in the Philosophy of Mathematics (1928)
‖ In connection with the preceding article by Otto Meyerhof, a few words on Nelson’s significance for the philosophy of mathematics might be added. Nelson was among those philosophers whose style of thinking resulted from a familiarity with the spirit of the exact sciences. Mathematics and physics represented the methodical ideal that he strove to achieve in elaborating his philosophical though...

متن کاملExplaining the Level of Human Thought in the Parallel Civilizations Based on Formal Structure and Visual Imagination Formed in Mythical Narratives
Myth, like any other form of narrative, has an undeniable role in visual imagination based on the foundations of mythical thought. Ernst Cassirer, by recovering the fundamental principles of mythical thought, brings against them to the foundations of contemporary rational thought and defines the fundamental features of mythical thought as compared to modern rational thought. He also believes t...
